deko luukku house

A tribute to Luukku house

Yesterday morning I had my morning coffee with me and I decided to browse trough my old deko magazines. Randomly I chose a one from the summer of 2011. I was happily surprised when I noticed that the magazine included an article about one of the greatest and most innovative houses that I’ve ever seen: the Luukku house by Aalto university students. I first saw this zero-energy house in the summer of 2011 when I visited a Holiday Housing Fair in Mäntyharju. The wooden little cabin stood in the middle of the area and I was immediately intrigued. I loved the wooden exterior and I spent a very long time inside the house just admiring the innovative approach to living. All the little details were super smart and beautiful and although the space is only 42 square meters it seemed more bigger just because of the wonderful design. It was definitely my favorite building at the fair and from time to time I returned to think about it. And when the Luukku house bumped …

SINNERLIG IKEA

IKEA’s SINNERLIG collection with Ilse Crawford

Ooh la la, it’s finally here! I’ve been waiting for this collection since IKEA published the first photos of collaboration with Ilse Crawford. I would love to have every single piece of the SINNERLIG collection and that’s quite rare! But if someone mixes cork, hand blown glass, natural materials and nude colors, I’m in! I love the simplicity of the line and the urban feeling it has. And come on, on top of everything, every single marketing picture includes plants! Heavenly! Can I have, like, every single one of them…? Pretty please? Myyty! Taivaallista! Voinko saada, niinku, joka ikisen noista tuotteista…? Pliis pliis pliis?

blueberry mush, mustikkapöperö

Karelian blueberry mush / Mustikkapöperö

Okay, here’s something that is very dear to me, something from my cultural roots and something full of memories. In Finnish it’s called ‘mustikkapöperö‘ which is translated blueberry mush. It’s a traditional Karelian seasonal dish (a dessert or breakfast, I think…). My grandmother was the one to teach me how to make mustikkapöperö when I was a kid. It was luxurious, as it still is, because it was such a rare delight. It’s only made when there’s fresh wild blueberries in the forest so this time of year is the only time to eat it (curse the ones who do it with FROZEN blueberries. NO NO NO). The forests have been full of blueberries this summer and of course I had to go and pick some for the winter and make some of this suspicious looking but oh so delicious treat. Basically it’s just fresh blueberries and another weird Finnish ingredient: ‘talkkunajauho‘. It’s a flour made of roasted oats. It’s quite bitter so you have to be careful with it but there’s no mustikkapöperö without it. …

GardenShop Fiskars

GardenShop in Fiskars village

Few days ago I visited the GardenShop Tahvoset in the lovely Fiskars village. (I was on a work trip and also visited a very big nursery: Puutarha Tahvoset Ltd. I had the privilege to take a tour there. I saw hundreds and hundreds of plants! And I also got a little glimpse of the next spring trends in the world of plants…). The Fiskars village is so beautiful and the GardenShop fits there perfectly. I really liked their little front garden and the stylish, white indoor space. A garden shop for my taste!   Muutama päivä sitten vierailin GardenShopissa ihanassa Fiskarsissa. Puutarhakauppa mun makuuni!

NASA vegetables

Growing vegetables in space

Good news for all of the future astronauts traveling long distances to other planets and galaxies! You will have some fresh vegetables! Because NASA has managed to grow some red romaine lettuce on the international space station for the first time. I have to admit that I actually thought that it would’ve been done, like, ages ago (maybe I’ve watched too many science fiction movies…). But I guess not. Well, anyway it’s a wonderful thing. The vegetable production system uses LED lights (red, green, blue) to grow the plants. Now I’m just waiting for the whole garden to be possible in space. Hyviä uutisia kaikille tulevaisuuden avaruusmatkailijoille, jotka matkustavat pitkiä matkoja eri planeetoille ja ehkä galakseihinkin! Saatte nimittäin matkaanne myös tuoreita kasviksia! Koska NASA on onnistunut kasvattamaan ensimmäistä kertaa ikinä punaista romainesalaattia kansainvälisellä avaruusasemallaan. Mun täytyy tunnustaa, että jotenkin kuvittelin, että se olisi ollut mahdollista jo kauan aikaa sitten  (ehkä oon katsonut liikaa scifi-leffoja…). Mutta ehkä ei sitten. Jokatapauksessa tämähän on mahtava uutinen! Kasvisten kasvatussysteemi avaruudessa perustuu erivärisiin LED-valoihin, joiden avulla kasvu onnistuu. Nyt vain odottelen, …

Natural home

It took me 30 years to realize what’s my style when it comes to the interior of my home. I had a too long retro period. It ended with my design studies over 10 years ago. I sold everything and traveled to India. When I came back, I liked everything with graphical prints, black & white, strong colour blocking. But when I became we and we moved in together few years ago, everything changed again. I think I found my home in my heart and I don’t mean our first apartment (which technically was quite awful). But there was light, there was space. I slowly sold again my old stuff. I wanted everything to be natural, neutral, kind of soft and simple, more close to nature. More wabi-sabi. The greatest thing is that we have the same taste when it comes to our home’s interior. We love raw wood, linen, white and neutrals, wool, leather, clay, making furniture ourselves, simplicity. There’s nothing better than washed and fresh white linen sheets in our futon bed. And this is the first …

CHAYR

CHAYR: Sitting on a field

I’m always intrigued when designers use ecological and natural materials when they bring something new to this world. Because let’s face it: there’s enough everything already. We don’t need another plastic chair. But we may need a seat called CHAYR by Henry&co just because it’s something quite smart. It’s made of hay, straw and wood. I love the sound of that, too. It takes me back to my childhood summers and the golden yellow fields, hay flowing in the wind. And I really love the modern look. Again, a design that I really look up to just because it really shows how to design something contemporary with the feeling of nature. Cool. Oon aina kiinnostunut, kun suunnittelijat käyttävät ekologisia ja luonnollisia materiaaleja suunnittellessaan jotain uutta tähän maalmaan. Koska hei: tässä maailmassa on jo ihan tarpeeksi kaikkea. Emme todellakaan tarvitse uusia muovituoleja. Kuulostaapa ihanalta! Tulee mieleen lapsuuden kesät ja kullankeltaiset viljapellot, …
