Spring Balcony 2017

It’s spring time FINALLY here in Finland, too. I mean, it’s been tough, because it’s been so cold and the statistics say that the spring is about one month late. The winter is harder and longer every year. But now there has been some beautiful, sunny and warm spring days and I can finally make our little and lovely balcony our little garden. You know we moved to a new city and apartment in December. And it’s always so cool when you get to plan and do your balcony for the first time. I’m really loving our little balcony, it’s so different than our huge previous one (remember this). That one took so much work with watering and I really hated emptying all that soil from planting boxes before we moved away. So now this new little balcony definitely controls my habit of gardening a lot of things. I just bough two balcony boxes and one hanging basket. For now. Today I also started our gardening season with lots of violets and (I couldn’t resist) …

The balcony garden that was

As you might remember I tried to downscale my garden plants for this summer. And that was a good thing because I didn’t even manage to take good care of this decreased amount of plants! Been so busy, you know. Well, I managed to grow some beautiful tomatoes. But again I got really disappointed about Finnish summer weather which is just not warm enough for tomatoes. I mean getting them lots of. It’s too much work compared to the harvest I get. So maybe next year I’ll skip the tomatoes, too (I’m saying this now but when the sowing season starts I might think again). But black kale was awesome again! Most of the herbs died because of the lack of watering and love. Oops. And remember PlantLink? I tried that with my tomatoes and it worked great! Although life was hectic I managed to water the tomatoes properly with the help of PlantLink. Also, I’m so pround of my Chef who is totally hooked with plants too. He grew the most amazing chocolate habanero …

Balcony vol. 2

I think nowadays my every post starts with “it’s been so hectic lately…”. Running your own business is hectic. But I’m really enjoying it, it’s exciting, it’s stressful in a good way (in a way that you drive yourself into levels that you didn’t even know you could achieve). And then you can go home and take care of your own garden. Which is like zen meditation. So here’s a few pics what is happening this year at my balcony garden. After last year I decided to go more minimal, only growing the ones that I enjoy eating and using while cooking. And add just a few plants for the looks. Bush tomatoes, black kale (palm kale), komatsuna and herbs like parsley, dill, basil and rosemary are the chosen ones. Then there’s pelargoniums and hay. And a strawberry! I’m really loving how lush the balcony looks again, even more now that it’s warm enough for the more tropical plants like cardamom and others to go out, too. Loving it!   Musta tuntuu, että nykyään jokainen …

Violets and vegetables

Hi there Spring! My spring at the balcony starts always with violets (Viola). Except this year I experimented with hyacinths but that is all past, they have bloomed and now the same basket is growing Allium. I just wanted to give you a little glimpse of what’s happening at the balcony at the moment. Life has been hectic but my plant babies like tomatoes and komatsuna are growing strong. The weather is suppose to be wonderful for the next few weeks here in Finland so I think it’s time to get my babies outside at the balcony. Cannot wait for them to grow even more!   Moikka Kevät! Mun kevät parvekkeella alkaa aina orvokeilla (Viola).

Spring hyacinths

Remember when I brought the bulbs out from the cellar? They were almost neon yellowish green and I was so sceptical about them going “normal” or starting to bloom. But see!!! They did all that! How beautiful and wonderful spring flowers I now have. And who said that hyacinths are only Christmas flowers? No no. When the sun is shining to our balcony and warming it up, the stunning scent of those beauties is amazing.

heather calluna vulgaris

Heather weather

The autumn is here! I’ve been cleaning our balcony garden like maniac in various occasions, throwing away all the bad-looking plants and it the space started to look so empty. So it was definitely the time to add some new seasonal flowers. The traditional red heather (Calluna vulgaris) is not something I like (except in nature) but I really like the white and green ones. So this little and more modern autumn basket was perfect choice for our balcony! I added some candles and other decorations and voilá – we’re ready for the crisp and mystical autumn nights!   Syksy on täällä!

balcony garden

Balcony and July

It’s been a long time since I’ve shown you our balcony garden. Now is the perfect time because we’ve just noticed how green and big our garden is and, of course, wonderful. We’ve been harvesting herbs, komatsuna and salads already, all delicious. The tomatoes are so big we had to move them and put some strings to hold them up. And there’s lots of little tomatoes on their way. There’s some new flowering annuals, also like summer clove. And a big pot for different herbs. I’m loving it and cannot wait to harvest even more.

Black man’s willy and other balcony stuff

Slowly but firmly the balcony garden is getting greener and bigger. So here’s a few pics from there. I also love the fact that the purple bell vine (Rhodochiton atrosanguineus) that I bought for our balcony is commonly called a Black man’s willy. Quite, well, enchanting. Aika viaton on tuo “keijunmekko” siihen verrattuna. Aika, noh, kiehtovaa.

pelargonium

Balcony garden extravaganza

Everything is out!!! The fact is I got bored and then I got inspired by the few hours of sunshine yesterday. There’s still going to be cold nights but I just couldn’t hold my horses any longer. I planted the zucchini seedlings out into the reclaimed buildings trash bags. Then I bought two cherry tomato seedlings, ‘Black Magic’ which makes beautiful and sweet brown-red tomatoes. Like chocolate tomatoes. They are now in one of the wooden boxes. The kales were planted, too, and with them I planted some salad mix seeds and sweet peas. So everything I planned are now actually growing in our balcony. From now on it’s just watering and taking care of them. I also want some colour there so I bought a few bright-coloured pelargoniums there. I have to add some more colour later. Ostin …
