Katri’s flower shop at Tampere market hall

My first real experience of flower shop and floristry was in a little flower shop at Tampere where I did my work practice. My teacher and mentor there was Katri Intonen who has over 30 years of experience with flowers. She didn’t own the place but I think the customers came just because of her and her skills. I learned the most about floral design and people during that period of time. Nowadays Katri has made her dream come true. She has her own little flower shop at the lovely old market hall at Tampere. It’s like going back home as she used to work at the market hall when she was younger. This is the place where people go to meet each other and it’s one of the liveliest places in the city. Every time I pass through the hall Katri’s shop has customers lining. When I went to see her to get these photos taken, I waited for a long time to chat with her. Just because there were few customers that really …

Pro Puu Association

Yesterday I spent the day at Lahti. One of the interesting places that I’ve been dreaming of visiting for a while now is Pro Puu Association and its center. The association is a modern guild of wood professionals like craftsmen, designers and architects. They are housed in a former match factory, a wonderful red brick building, just by the lake and harbour. There they have a gallery space and a shop but also spaces for the craftsmen to work. In the gallery there have been quite interesting exhibitions like one about Japanese wood joints. And the shop is full of beautiful wood work from different professionals. Every item has a modern Scandinavian feeling but with a touch of old world. You could just feel how much talent, skills and understanding of the materials everything these had in it. Respect.   Vietin eilisen päivän Lahdessa. Yksi mielenkiintoisimman kuuloisista paikoista, jossa mun on pitänyt käydä jo jonkun aikaa, on Pro Puu -keskus. Pro Puu ry on vähän niin kuin moderni kilta, joka kokoaa yhteen kaikki puualan ammattilaiset: puusepät, suunnittelijat ja arkkitehdit. Keskus …

Hyötykasviyhdistys is Finland’s biggest garden association. And I just found out that they have a brand new website which I’ve waited for a long time. It looks amazing and there’s some awesome stuff there (the only negative is that it’s only in Finnish but then again, this is association about Finnish plants and gardening). But I’m sure that in every country there is an association like this. That encourages organic farming, versatile use of plants (and especially native plants), rents communal garden spaces, sells  their own seeds and gives advices to any kind of gardening enthusiast. I first got to know this association and its lovely gardening and seed shop called Alku & Juuri when I lived in Helsinki above it. I visited that shop a lot because the atmosphere there was so amazing. I could spend hours just picking up some weird sounding plant seeds. So if you visit Helsinki and want to visit a wonderful little garden shop, be sure to go there. — Löysin juuri Hyötykasviyhdistyksen uudet nettisivut, joiden uudistumista oonkin odottanut …
